What Have You Written?

Whether it was originally a movie, video game, or any other form of entertainment, we know that one of the best ways to really get in to a fictional universe is to read a novel about it. Sometimes they're a worthwhile read (like many if the Warhammer novels), sometimes they're garbage (hello most video game novels!), but we read them because we just can't get enough of that universe.

Avid readers are also likely to be writers. And if you've been to a forum dedicated to a particular game or movie, you've likely seen an area dedicated to "fan fics." Short for "fan fiction," these are unofficial stories written by people who want to explore what they love through their own writing.

I used to write my own fan fics in notebooks all the time. They were more like short stories than novels, but it was a great way to see all the characters I loved. I crafted stories for Narnia, Batman, Power Rangers, Mario... Whatever got my imagination going is what I put on paper.

As I got older I stopped using familiar characters and moved on to universes I enjoyed. I made a wizard for Middle Earth, a pilot who flew with Fox McCloud, a hero who battled the monsters of Greek mythology, and even did a painfully long story about a farmer from Harvest Moon.

However, my absolute favorite was written a few years ago. The first year I taught creative writing, several of my students talked me in to NaNoWriMo. It stands for National Novel Writing Month, and is a challenge that takes place every November that has writers around the world writing a 50,000 word novel in a single month. It made me want to cry, but in the end I succeeded.

My story took place during an outbreak in the Night of the Living Dead universe. I'd always wanted to write a classic, campy zombie novel and this was my chance to finally do it. It had a dad and daughter trying to get to safety, and I used every classic zombie trick I could think of. People hid their bites until it was too late; survivors left others to die; there was a gun store; and as a nod to Left 4 Dead the story even ended with a helicopter and a hospital.

Sadly, that's the last big thing I wrote. I've jotted down ideas here and there, but nothing has come of it. I'd love to sit down and pen another great fan fiction, but adult life has a way of stealing the desire to get lost for hours in a worlds I love.

What stories have you guys written about your favorite characters or universes? Do you still find time to do it even as an adult? I promise not to steal your ideas, so share your stories!

See you tomorrow!
